Day 6: Compassionate Eyes

The way we look at the world determines our reality – and our inner reality determines our outlook. What do your eyes reveal about your inner world? Have you looked at yourself with kindness today? Have you given a kind glance to a stranger today? How can we share unconditional love, boundless equanimity, loving kindness, and compassion with just a glance?

Our practice today beings in the mirror…

First, stand in front of a mirror and close your eyes. Imagine that your reflection is looking at you and beaming with love, kindness, patience, forgiveness, acceptance.

Second, open your eyes and practice being present with your reflection – looking yourself in the eyes with love, kindness, patience, forgiveness, acceptance. When judgement begins to cloud your vision, simply acknowledge the judgement, see your reflection for what it is (a wrinkle, grey hair, a pimple, crooked teeth, etc.) and give your reflection love, patience, forgiveness. Be very gentle with yourself.

Third, close your eyes again and bask in the inner peace of self-love and compassion. Do this throughout the day as needed – holding judgement and habitual patterns of self-hatred gently, with love, acknowledging and honoring their presence, and finally letting them go.

Blessings, Arwen Pema
