The Homestead is Hiring!

It’s a great feeling for a small business to announce their success and positive growth with a job posting! I am thrilled that our grassroots nonprofit has grown to the point of hiring staff to help things run smoothly, and to see us into a new phase of community service. Here’s what we’re looking for:

Market Manager

We are thrilled for our current Market Manger, Casey McCalip, who has recently been promoted at the Mountain People’s CoOp to General Manger! Congrats, Casey! That said, she is moving on from her position at the Homestead in April and we are looking to hire her replacement in the next two weeks.

This position is a fast paced, exciting opportunity to grow with a nonprofit that is making a positive impact in our community.

Preferred experience:

  • retail experience (especially grocery, co-op)
  • nonprofit experience
  • fresh produce experience (growing, handling, storage, and/or preparation)
  • comfortable with technology including online point of sale, multi-media, social media (or a quick and willing learner)
  • available one full day a week, any day Wednesday through Sunday from 9-4. 
  • honest
  • reliable
  • friendly

Job description: 

  • one Saturday or Sunday shift every week 9-5
  • show up on time, clean, sane, kind, etc. NO drugs or alcohol use while on the clock
  • ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Customer Service: making sure the Market is open, clean, and stocked; interacting with the public, kindness, graciousness, and attentiveness to customer and community needs; timing and flow of business and conversation at check-out; familiar with the Homestead’s mission; signing up new members and volunteers.
  • handling cash/checks/credit cards; taking payment. basic math
  • ability to create a budget (monthly, annual) for the Market
  • careful attention to products, especially produce! 
  • willing to take online Food Safety Manager Certification course, or already FSM Certified
  • basic marketing: taking and sharing product photos, sales, promotions
  • business savvy: understand markup, margin, profit. 
  • Ordering: reaching out to vendors; creating new wholesale accounts; finding the best quality for the price; negotiating wholesale contracts, pricing, delivery.
  • Inventory: keeping our inventory fresh and fulfilling member requests; tracking/minimizing loss through promotion, Cafe, donations; receiving, pricing, stocking, and updating online inventory

Other requirements:

  • not currently acting as or related to a current board member, or other compensated officer or contractor
  • uphold the Homestead’s non-discrimination policy
  • zero tolerance for sexual harassment 
  • works closely with Executive Director, reports to Homestead Board of Directors
  • finally, I am really hoping to find someone who has a long-term investment in the community, commitment to service, and wants to grow with the Homestead. This is starting as a very part time position, with the ability to grow into more.

Compensation:

  • Starting wage is $15/hr
  • Employee discount of 20%

Assistant Director

This is a new position to assist the Executive Director with the administrative duties of running a fast-growing nonprofit!

Preferred experience:

  • retail experience (especially grocery, co-op)
  • nonprofit experience
  • fresh produce experience (growing, handling, storage, and/or preparation)
  • comfortable with technology including online point of sale, multi-media, social media (or a quick and willing learner)
  • available one full day a week, any day Wednesday through Sunday from 9-4.

  • working with volunteers: recruiting, scheduling, training
  • basic marketing: taking and sharing photos from events, promotional flyers
