Real compassion begins when we are able to deeply empathize with the suffering of others. Compassionate action arises when we forsake our own comfort and happiness in exchange for that of others. For most people, this takes practice, and a firm resolve to benefit others. It also takes a generous amount of wisdom to understand that “forsaking my own happiness” does not mean becoming a doormat. What good am I to others if I’m not manifesting my fullest potential? This is the way of true compassion.
